Ubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin, released in April 2025, continues Ubuntu’s focus on ease‑of‑use for desktop users. Targeted at developers, students, and general consumers, this edition ships with full 64‑bit support and an optional ARM64 build, delivering a modern Linux experience across a wide hardware spectrum.
Ubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin ships with the latest GNOME 45 desktop, delivering a smoother workflow and refined visual polish. Under the hood, it runs the Linux 6.5 kernel, bringing improved hardware support for newer CPUs, GPUs, and ARM64 devices. The installer has been revamped with a streamlined UI and native ZFS support, allowing users to create encrypted ZFS root partitions out‑of‑the‑box. Snap Store receives a faster backend, and the default Snap packages have been updated for better performance. Enhanced security comes from an updated AppArmor profile set and automatic kernel live‑patching for critical vulnerabilities. The previous LTS, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat, laid the groundwork for many of these improvements, while the companion Ubuntu Server 25.04 shares the same kernel and package base.
Ubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin will receive security updates until April 2027, with standard nine‑month support as it is not an LTS release.
